"Pendulum - Gilt Bronze - Empire - France - 19th Century"
Gilt bronze mantel clock, Empire resting on four turned legs supporting an oval base decorated with garlands and zigzag ropes. Two scholars sit on the pedestal and study books in front of the "library" located under the clock face. The two boys study diligently without worrying about the time; they wear short chitons and are barefoot. The boy on the left is holding the book and following the text with his finger to a particularly interesting place. The boy on the right seems to be reading aloud, which is emphasized by the gesture of his left hand, thus bringing the scene to life despite its order, symmetry and academic atmosphere. Enameled dial with Arabic numerals and original “moonpoise” steel hands signed “Blanc Fils, Palais Royale”. Eight-day movement with silk suspension, exterior counting wheel striking the hours and half-hours on a silver bell, circa 1810. France 19th century
