Old fragment of final roof figure collected in the Blackwater area in Papua New Guinea. The final roof figures evoke the founding myths of the tribe and are displayed at each end of the roofs of the ceremonial houses. These sculptures commonly show an ancestor of the tribe surrounded by totemic animals and in particular a bird often perched on the shoulders. This large fragment (103 x 75 x 56 cm) represents a bird of this type. Hard wood worn by its 15/20 years of exposure at the top of a ceremonial house.
