Ivory Coast, Baoulé people, circa 1950, superb and important statue "Waka Sona" (wooden character) representing a man standing on a base, calves harmoniously curved, plump buttocks, fingered hands placed on both sides the other from the navel, the face of intense serenity with fine features. The beard and hairstyle are finely executed. Through the classicism of its forms, the great beauty of the character represented, the aesthetics and elegance which emerge from the whole, this statue is the image of the Baoulé ideal of beauty. The care given to this statue indicates the social rank of the man represented, the numerous scarifications and keloids which cover his body indicate his importance on a traditional level.
