Elegant and rare pair of Empire cassolettes in gilded and patinated bronze with a sea green marble base, which can be transformed into candleholders. The body of this elegantly crafted pair of Empire cassolettes has been executed in brown patinated bronze with beautifully contrasting applied decorations in mercury gilded bronze. Standing on a square base in see green marble, they have a gadrooned rim and are decorated with stylized foliage, palmettes and lionesses’ muzzles. Further, they are covered with removable lids with openwork decoration and topped with a pine cone. One can easily change the cassolettes into a pair of luxurious candleholders by simply turning the lids, hence the name “for double use”.
These cassolettes are a perfect example of the taste and stylistic forms of the Empire when the imagination of the forms, the casting, the chiseling and the gilding had simultaneously reached a level of absolute perfection.
This exquisite pair of cassolettes is in an excellent state of preservation with their original mercury gilding.
Origin: France, circa 1810.
Dimensions: 40 cm high, diameter 13,5 cm. Size of the square base: 10 x 10 cm.
