The top is highlighted by a characteristic border consisting of a right angle topped by a quarter circle. Once in place, this forms a perfectly freestanding structure, seemingly sealed to the base even though it is simply placed on top.
This table, in its original 1977 version in solid travertine, produced in Italy by Cassina, is an aesthetic and technical creation.
Travertine is a timeless material already used in Roman times for the construction of the Colosseum and many other monuments.
Formally, it is both a minimalist sculpture that aims to be almost monolithic and also an evocation and homage to the monumental ancient creations based on columns and lintels, which founded the history of architecture several millennia ago. Technically, it also incorporates architectural principles, such as the volumetric and therefore mass ratio of its components, as well as the contact surfaces between its parts for perfect stability.
This table was later produced in different sizes and marble colors.
