The Massiers and the birth of artistic ceramics in Vallauris The Massier family settled in Vallauris in the 17th century to found one of the first terracotta factories in the city. If it built its reputation on traditional culinary ceramics, developments in the 20th century encouraged Clément (1844-1917), Delphin (1836-1907) and Jérôme Massier (1820-1909) to renew themselves. They then surrounded themselves with painters and sculptors to shape the first artistic pieces of Vallauris. They were the first to use glossy ceramic glazes. Their work became known internationally during universal exhibitions, like that of 1889 during which Clément Massier received a gold medal for his ceramic vases with iridescent decoration. The production of Vallauris benefited at this time from the influx of tourists on the Côte d'Azur, eager to treat themselves to a souvenir of local craftsmanship.
