Stereoscopic viewer called "Mexican" from varnished wood collection, manufactured from the year 1860. 3 stereoscopic maps of the ruins of the Paris Commune of 1871 including the Vendôme Column, Boulevard Voltaire and The Ministry of Finance. Shortly after the capitulation of Paris and the signing of the armistice with Prussia on January 28, 1871, a revolution broke out in Paris between March 18 and May 28, 1871: it was the Paris Commune. During this civil war which pitted the Communards (men of the National Guard to which were added volunteer or enlisted civilians) against the Versailles (troops of professional soldiers commanded by the government of Adolphe Thiers entrenched in Versailles) several buildings were destroyed. The destruction was the result of repeated bombings by Versailles to retake the capital and fires perpetrated by the Communards. On May 25, on the right bank, government troops advanced with difficulty. Violent fighting took place around and on the Place du Château d'Eau (current Place de la République) which was locked by several barricades in the surrounding area: one on Boulevard Saint-Martin, another on Boulevard Voltaire and another on Boulevard du Temple. . The fighting continued throughout the evening.
