"Scultura In Terracotta Policroma Raffigurante San Giovannino Col Cardellino."
Polychrome terracotta sculpture depicting St. John the Baptist with the Goldfinch. This work can be attributed to the Renaissance sculptor Antonio Begarelli (Modena, 1499 – Modena, 28 December 1565). Begarelli was an Italian sculptor, primarily a modeler of terracotta statues. This new work depicts St. John, strongly characterized by a delicate physiognomy and curly hair, modeled in a singular and unique way, almost Begarelli's signature. The body of the Giovannino has been restored, originally showing fractures and some deficiencies, but the face. In perfect condition, it reveals the jaunty and delicate physiognomy, characteristic of the Modenese sculptor. For comparison, the St. John of the Annunciation of the sculptural group 'Madonna di Piazza' originally placed on the façade of the Palazzo Comunale in Modena.
