Extraordinary Koula tied in Turkey under the Ottoman Empire, in superb state of conservation, from the beginning of the 18th century.
Museum quality piece. If ancient pieces from Asia Minor have been preserved to us in such remarkable condition, it is undoubtedly thanks to the quality of the wools or silks used, and their dense weaving, but also because they have not were held only by pious hands, as were those who tied them. These rooms were only used for prayer and were put away afterwards.
Two small towns in Anatolia, close to each other, have left us remarkable prayer rugs of unparalleled artistic quality. These are Koula and Ghiordès whose inhabitants weaved pieces of beauty at home which undoubtedly rival the beauty of the masterpieces of the Persian workshops.
Koula is a town and district in Manissa Province, in the Aegean region of Turkey.
Our model features a solid dark red niche, adorned with an ornamental style so deliberately floral that the lamp and its light rays took the shape of flowers. Old models have two columns framing the niche.
A delicate tree of life takes its source from the center of the mihrab.
The border presents a decoration of bouquets, tulips and carnations appear, cleverly spaced. For the majority of Anatolian rugs, and especially the prayer pieces, the Koula does not really have any characteristic designs, so it is very difficult to recognize them.
The warp and weft of Koula are always in wool, which gives a light, fluid appearance.
Ghiordès rugs are more rigid, which is why it is necessary to carefully analyze their execution to differentiate between a Ghiordès and a Koula.
Koula come on a red background and a blue background, red being the most rarely used color of the two. This carpet of great beauty and delicacy of design and coloring is a pure jewel of Anatolian art of the 18th century.
The density of this part is approximately 200,000 nodes per M2.
The Koula, like the Ghiordès and the Ladik, are small in size 100-120 x 160-200.
Museum quality rug in very good condition, magnificent collectible artifact.
