Vincent Manago, born in Toulon (Var) on January 15, 1880, died in Paris on June 30, 1936. Passionate about painting, he joined the Académie Julian where he studied under the direction of the painter and sculptor Jean Paul Lorens. Building on the lessons he received, Vincent Manago embarked on a career as a painter and began selling his first paintings.
Very quickly, he enjoyed great success and was one of the best-known artists in Marseille between 1900 and 1913. Moreover, his work was even presented at the Marseille International Fair and at the Colonial Exhibition of Landscapes of Marseille.
Africa and Provence where it was very favorably received by critics. An iconography enriched by travels and postcards He specializes in orientalist and Mediterranean paintings (Port of Martigues, La Rochelle, Venice) etc. In his compositions, he mainly represents landscapes and seascapes. To depict these landscapes, which are very different from those of his childhood, Vincent Manago takes advantage of his stays in Tunisia and Algiers and uses the scenes observed during his travels to enrich his iconography. His artistic work shows a real influence from his stays in Tunisia and Algeria; He uses bright colors in his paintings and like other orientalist artists he also draws inspiration from scenes depicted on postcards. (Collections ND. Phot., Librairie d’Amico, Tunis). Vincent Manago also worked as a decorator in several private residences in Tunis and Algiers. The Gray Museum (Haute-Saône) preserves several of his paintings. In 1903, he actually used postcards to paint a street scene depicting a young woman sorting grains into a bowl; a version of this subject can be found at the Musée des beaux-arts de Marseille. He enjoyed great success during his career; his seascapes, his genre paintings of the Mediterranean coast and his orientalist scenes have fascinated critics and the amateur public, which explains why he has received numerous private commissions. Naturalized French at the beginning of the 1920s. Most of his works are now kept at the museum of Gray in Haute-Saône and Marseille. In his compositions, he uses very bright colors characteristic of orientalist landscapes. In some of his works, he treats the subject with small brush strokes, which brings his work closer to the Provençal post-impressionist school. Luminosity is also a very important aspect of the painter's compositions since it makes them shine and reinforces the warm atmosphere that emanates from them; his paintings are always full of life. Today, some of his works are sold for thousands of euros and at prices even beyond their high estimate.
