The Order of the Elephant was created by King Christian I of Denmark (1448-1481) in 1478. Christian V modified it in 1693 and gave it its current organization, taking inspiration from of that of the French Order of the Holy Spirit. This Order is exclusively intended for princes of the royal blood (Danish or foreign) and foreign heads of state. This is the most important distinction in Denmark.
