Oil On Canvas The Garden Suzanne Drouet-cordier (1885-1970)

Very beautiful oil on canvas by the artist Suzanne Drouet Cordier or also known as Drouet-Réveillaud. The painting is signed Drouet.C. Old painting around 1920 probably before her marriage to André Réveillaud in 1925. The canvas is not in very good condition, old restoration. (A backlit photo shows this well). The frame is in good condition except for some wear on the corners. Granddaughter of the sculptor Charles Cordier (1827-1905), Suzanne Cordier was one of the first women admitted to the Beaux-Arts in Paris. She studied under the direction of Ferdinand Humbert and had as classmates Marcelle Ackein and Aline de Lens. She exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1910, won a silver medal in 1921 and obtained prizes from the Colonial Society of French Artists offering her a scholarship to Tunisia in 1919, then to Morocco in 1923. She married André Réveillaud, civil controller of Meknes then lawyer in Fez and writer. She stayed in Morocco until 1950, living in the medina of Fez. It is in this country that she creates the majority of her work. She participated in several exhibitions at the Derche gallery in Casablanca with the painters Marcel Vicaire and Jean Baldoui from 1929 to 1931 where her work was praised by critics of the time. In 1954, she obtained a prize allowing her to travel to Cameroon. She traveled the country bringing back paintings representing remote villages and portraits of women from different tribes. She then undertook a cargo trip in 1960 which took her to China and Japan, then another to Mexico in 1963, by plane this time, bringing back from these countries new paintings all testifying to her great mastery of use of colors.
