Exceptional and almost unique Napolaine gouache from the 19th century in perfect condition and superbly preserved in freshness representing the famous Blue Grotto on the island of CAPRI. It is in its original frame in gilded and patinated wood with Louis XVI style palmette motifs. This famous Cave is located in Anacapri on the North East shore of the island of CAPRI, during antiquity this Cave was a Nymphaeum (a sanctuary dedicated to the aquatic Nymphs of Roman mythology, long since considered a place of magic, witchcraft and various superstitions It was rediscovered in the 19th century by the painters August KOPISCH (1799-1853) and Swiss painter Ernst FRIES (1801-1833). The blue glow of the cavity is due to the natural light which penetrates in the water and this refracts on the walls of the cave.
