"Carved Bamboo Tea Or Tobacco Box, Indochina, Late 19th Century"
Large cylindrical box carved from a bamboo cane with Asian decorations of characters, fauna and flora, as well as pagodas and temples. The top of the lid is engraved with different inscriptions and drawings: in the center a naval anchor with the initials RF of the French Republic, and two dates 1885 and 1887, the time when the Indochinese Union was created, with on the edge the indication of the French colonies of Annam, Tonkin (corresponding today to Vietnam) and China, as well as Nam-Dinh which was the largest city in French Indochina. At the top of the anchor are the initials JF testifying to the ownership of this box. Good general condition, except for a few rare small chips at the base of the box and the lid, a sign of age.
