He comes from a very old Flemish family and grew up in Belgium before that his parents settled in Paris shortly before the war of 1870. Edmond Coppenolle studied fine arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and began his artistic career as a landscape painter. He quickly became famous for his mastery of light and color, as well as his elegant and harmonious compositions. Like many artists of his time, he also worked on floral still lifes, portraits and genre scenes. Edmond participated in numerous exhibitions in Belgium and France, notably at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, where he won a gold medal.
