Object description :

"Karadagh Gallery Rug, Persia, Kadjar, 135 X 288 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool Late 18th Century, Early 19th Century"
Extremely rare Karadagh carpet, not to be confused with the Karabagh of the Caucasus.
Width: 135 cm for a length of 288 cm. Hand-knotted wool between 8 and 9 knots in width and 7 to 8 knots in length.
This type of carpet, essentially carpet of passage, was knotted in the region of Karadagh, on the border between North-West Iran, Persia and the Caucasus.
They are rare and often confused with Caucasians of the Shirvan type. The texture is fine, our model is in used condition, shows some wear but remains a real artifact of this period.
the decor of these pieces is supported by the very beautiful border including the braid presenting sticks connecting Medes stars on a yellow/curry yellow background. The influence of the Caucasus is major, in the shape and colors: red, pale blue, midnight blue, curry and white. The importance of white, cream or ivory allows the elements of the decor to be forcefully included.
Two braids of carnations surround the border, this flower is widely used in the Caucasus and Turkey (flower of the knotters)
A thin row of "medahill", stylized arrowheads closes the border. The midnight blue field is decorated with a large row of stylized spiders or tarantulas.
This design is present on many types of tribal rugs. It allows "in tradition" to ward off any presence of stinging or biting insects, tarantulas, scorpions, etc. Six rectangles are inscribed with stylized flowers between four octagonal medallions, two blue, two red. These medallions with trees of life and flower stakes are of rare delicacy. These medallions are placed on a bed of three rows of flowers surprisingly modern.
Our model is of particular interest in its design, representing the junction of a tribal art, often rectilinear with a more curvilinear Persian art. This piece was born in the austere region of the Hériz family, mother of the Karadje, carpets with smaller medallions.
The region is and has always been a zone of intense passage for all populations, it is easy to understand the influence of the populations, Turkish, Armenian, Persian, etc. on these pieces.
Certainly its dating in the first part of the 19th century is the most tangible, but placing it in the end of the 18th century remains plausible for all the reasons given.
Piece with a beautiful patina, wear from use, colors, of natural origin, a little faded but remaining fresh for the midnight blue and curry.
Dimensions: 135 cm (53") wide by 288 cm (113") long This rug has been professionally and environmentally friendly cleaned.
