Hunting Dogs
Oil on canvas
31 x 38 cm - In frame (wear and flaws) 47 x 53 cm
A pair of hunting dogs, depicted in the shade of a group of trees in a hilly landscape, are intent on attacking two ducks, their future prey.
The painting is signed by the Flemish painter Adriaen De Gryeff, active in Ghent and Antwerp in 1687, member of the guild of artists in 1699 and then in Brussels, famous for his hunting scenes.
The subject matter is more typical of de Gryeff, who specialised in small paintings depicting animals and outdoor hunting scenes, often set in Mediterranean landscapes, reworking the themes dear to Jan Fyt (1611-1661), with a much lighter painting with elegant decorative connotations.
These works were collected by royalty and aristocrats keen on country 'sports'.
Today, they can be found in many illustrious collections, such as Schloss Schleissheim (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen), the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the Musée des Beaux Arts in Marseille and the Royal Museums in Brussels. Other examples can be found in the museum collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
