Gustave Maincent (1848-1897) oil on canvas representing characters seeming to have fun climbing on a Parisian lamppost. Probable view of Montmartre in its so-called Montparnasse setting. Dimensions without frame: 40 cm x 31 cm Dimensions with frame: 53 cm x 45 cm Gustave Maincent was born on March 14, 1848, in Batignolles (Paris). He is the student of Isidore Pils and Cabasson. He exhibited at the Salon in 1869 (Le pont Marie), 1876 (Paris seen from the Butte Montmartre), and at the Salon of French artists from 1881 (Place Pigalle, honorable mention) to 1897 (Forced departure, Flooding of the Seine). Staying at the end of his life in Chatou, at the Maison Fournaise, where some of his paintings are kept, he rubbed shoulders with renowned impressionist painters. He specializes in views of Paris and its suburbs. He died on October 2, 1897, in Rueil Malmaison (Hauts-de-Seine). Distinctions: Knight of the Legion of Honor (April 16, 1897).
