Pewter Timbal - Montargis, 18th Century

Pewter TIMBAL in flared shape with gadrooned pedestal engraved in full “au tremblé” with friezes of geometric motifs.
Control mark: crowned FF / MON(TAR)GIS / 1694.
Hallmark of Louis Gabriel SAMAIN received master in Paris in 1766: flower maintained / GLS / P. (He settled in Montargis in 1769).
Height: 11.3 cm.
MONTARGIS, Last third of the 18th century

Of good quality in very good condition and of rare provenance; to my knowledge, the only copy listed to date for this city.
Like many production centers, the royal edict of 1691 establishing the obligation of control was not respected. This 1694 vintage has probably never been updated; it was used throughout the 18th century and therefore does not allow it alone, in the absence of a maker's mark, to date the objects bearing it.
