Object description :

"Jean-marcel Boudouin, Drawing Architecture International Exhibition 1937 Gouache Art Deco"
BOUDOUIN Jean-Marcel (1906-1986) Project for a neo-Romanesque villa (secondary facade), international exhibition of 1937 Gouache on paper Architectural study presented during the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques of 1937 (label on the frame) Beautiful framing modern (framed under glass) Besides the fact that the works of architect Jean-Marcel Boudouin are rare on the market, this is a unique work. If we do not know any drawings by Jean-Marcel Boudouin other than the brilliant studies linked to his profession as an architect; the latter attest to an artistic talent and vocation going beyond the skillful manner of a particularly gifted man of his corporation. His gouache drawings made in particular for the international exhibition of arts and techniques of 1937 (the gouache dating from the end of the Art Deco period that we are putting on sale comes from it - label on the frame) indeed have an artistic value just as much as 'historical. Let us recall the context of this exhibition. Inaugurated on May 4, 1937 by Albert Lebrun, then President of the Republic, it ended on November 25, 1937. It was on this occasion that the Palais du Trocadéro was demolished and replaced by the current Palais de Chaillot. The Public Works pavilion has been preserved and today houses the Economic and Social Council. Pavilions housing the 52 exhibiting countries had been built along the Seine between the Pont d'Iéna (the width of which had been doubled) and the Pont Alexandre III; but also in the Trocadéro garden and on the Champ de Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, as well as on Cygnes Island. It included an amusement park, a colonial park, an electric train to travel around, and the illuminated fountains of the Trocadéro. That is 100 hectares from the Chaillot hill to the Place d'Iéna for a total of 31,053,700 visitors. The 1937 exhibition - and Jean-Marcel Boudouin's drawing is one of the best proofs of this, an accomplished synthesis - had as its object the fusion and completeness of Art and Technology; this international exhibition tended to promote the necessary union of Beauty and Usefulness. In this context marking the end of the interwar period, at the dawn of the Second World War, to defend this postulate was to work for peace. This exhibition has also remained famous for the symbolic confrontation which took place on both sides of the Pont d'Iéna; the pavilion of the Soviet Union (with its colossal sculpture of the worker and the kolkhoz woman) facing the no less monumental pavilion, topped with the Nazi eagle, of Hitler's Germany.
