"Blackened Pear Wood Support Unit, Boulle Spirit, Napoleon III Period – Mid-19th Century"
Support unit, in blackened pear wood and Boulle marquetry, decorated with bronzes and brass inlays dating from the Napoleon III era. It opens with a double door with a miter cut frame. They are each dark with a panel surrounded by a bronze molding and are inlaid with chiseled brass, on a background of tortoise shells, decorated with foliage, palmettes and scrolls. These doors are fitted with an original working lock with bronze entry and key. The interior offers an oak shelf on battens with blackened pear wood edge and fillets. The canted uprights are decorated with caryatid children and large bronze falls. The belt is richly decorated with moldings of acanthus leaf friezes, eggs and a scalloped baguette. The sides have spandrels. In the center are large motifs depicting the face of a Greek goddess. The whole rests on a slightly cut-out plinth with mascarons, motifs, nets and cul-de-lampe bearing the image of the god Bacchus. This piece of furniture is topped with black Mazy marble, also with projections. The interior of the doors is mahogany. The back and bottom of the furniture are in oak.
