"Azande 'kpinga' Throwing Knife"
The “Kpinga” or locally called “Hunga Munga” is a unique and deadly weapon used among the Zande tribes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was used as a weapon by elite warriors. Only certain men of status and combat ability could wield these throwing knives aloud. Later, around the turn of the century, the “kpinga” became a more ceremonial dowry and status symbol and was kept and cherished in order to preserve and honor their ancestors. The “kpinga” is a multi-bladed knife that requires training because only the most experienced warriors could use it out loud. Aside from being a deadly instrument, the throwing knife bears a resemblance to great symbolism such as manhood and masculinity, with regards to the snout-shaped lower blade. “Kpinga” throwing knives were used in combat and stored inside their shields. The decoration varies by region and is only permitted for warriors and high-ranking tribesmen. The blade was forged locally, has a very fine rolled forging pattern, some forging defects and is sharpened on each edge.
