"Duchess Louis XVI Around 1780 Stamped Jb Lelarge Jean-baptiste Lelarge (1743-1802)"
Duchess Louis XVI around 1780 stamped JB LELARGE Jean-Baptiste LELARGE (1743-1802) Master February 1, 1775 cf. Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIII Siecle, 1989, p. 501 et seq. Exterior length: 1.87 m Interior length: 1.60 m Width: 67 cm Height of the head: 1.02 m Height of the foot: 72 cm Lelarge was one of the best cabinetmakers of the reign of Louis XVI. Coming from a family of cabinetmakers, Jean-Baptiste III did his apprenticeship on rue de Cléry in the workshop of his father, Jean-Baptiste II, and succeeded him after receiving his master's letters on February 1, 1775. He produced Louis XVI style seats of undeniable class. Although his name is not mentioned in the Garde-Meuble archives, he worked extensively for a wealthy French and foreign clientele, including the King of Portugal. The seats of Jean-Baptiste LELARGE III for the most part demonstrate a very beautiful elegance: robust, without heaviness, constructed with rigor, impeccably assembled, they are decorated with simple moldings or fine and incisive sculptures, well distributed and without excess. He has retained the same stamp as his father: IB LELARGE. Our Duchess is covered in a pretty ecru fabric with freshly dyed floral patterns, with matching cushions. The six conical and fluted legs are equipped with casters for easy mobility. Inv. no. 2,246 €4,450
