We can date our painting to the 18th century. In this portrait, which can be described as an expression head or tronie, the painter represents an elderly man with a long beard. Under the influence of the famous Rembrandt, Dutch painters often created expressive portraits often called tronie. Tronie, a 17th-century Dutch word meaning "face", is a distinctive genre of painting from the Golden Age of Dutch painting and Flemish Baroque painting. This genre combines elements of portraiture, history painting and genre scene and usually depicts a part of a single character for which the artist has worked to represent a facial expression. It should be understood that these portraits more or less correspond to the French definition of the term “face”. During the 17th century in Holland, these facial studies established themselves as an art form in their own right, while in the Flemish tradition the tronie was considered more of a study.
