Original lithograph representing a horsewoman and two clowns in the background. The theme of the composition and its framing are characteristic of the production of poster artists of this period.
Signature R Ranft in the plate, stamp of "Estampe Moderne" in the margin. France, 1898.

Richard Ranft (1862-1931) is a Swiss painter, draftsman and engraver. He first studied painting and drawing in Geneva where he learned the art of landscape and then in Paris in Courbet's workshops and Auguste Dumont who taught him the art of engraving. He produced numerous lithographic plates and continued landscape painting.  .He participated to the Salon des Cent with a personal exhibition.He worked for the Estampe Moderne and the newspaper l'Estampe Nouvelle.Between 1892 & 1913,he created several drawing for several novels and  publications.Raft died in 1931 ,before a retrospective exhibition of his artworks in the Salon d'Automne.
L'estampe Moderne published between may1897 and  april1899, is a monthly publication made of 4 original chromo lithographs created especially for the review by each artists  .
