Léon Gaumont (1864-1946) was a French inventor, film producer and entrepreneur.
He founded the company L.Gaumont et Cie originally to deal with photographic equipment, then the company began producing short films in 1897 to promote a projector of its own production. Among the first important films produced were the soap operas Judex and Fantômas, the comedy series with Ernest Bourbon and Bébé with Renè Dary and the newsreels.
At various times, directors such as Abel Gance, Alfred Hitchcock and animation pioneer Émile Cohl worked for the house. Gaumont dominated the European film industry until the outbreak of the First World War.
Gaumont is still an independent production company and is recognized as one of France's leading producers and distributors, producing successful films such as Léon and The Fifth Element.
