“La Baccanthe” Very beautiful print in bronze with brown patina with a green background Based on the original plaster from 1913 Sand cast probably from the Patrouilleau Foundry around 1920/1930 Rests on a square base in veined green marble bearing the cartouche: “C. Alaphilippe » Height without the base: 91 cm Dimensions of the base: 15.5 x 15 x 15 cm Biography: Camille ALAPHILIPPE (1874 – after 1941?) Born in Tours, he studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Tours before joining Paris at the age of 20 where he was a student of Louis Ernest Barrias. In 1898 he won the First Prize of Rome for sculpture for his interpretation of “Cain fleeing sin”. That same year, he participated in the Salon des artistes français for the first time. He stayed from 1898 to 1902 as a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome. Back in Paris, he pursued a career alongside work as a sculptor in Alexandre Bigot's sandstone factory. He collaborated with various architects including Jules Lavirotte on the creation of buildings and facades that have remained famous such as the Hôtel Céramic av de Wagram in Paris. In 1906, he married Anna Von Oertzen, née Von Gottberg, a sculptor known as Annie Avog. After the Great War, demobilized, the couple settled in Algeria. The couple quickly inserted themselves into Algiers artistic life and participated in numerous exhibitions and events. He created the “Monument to Raffi” in memory of a former mayor of Algiers, as well as around ten monuments dedicated to the victims of the war in several cities in Algeria.
