A French painter and illustrator of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Luc-Olivier Merson was a major exponent of historical and religious painting of his time. His masterpieces include La vérité (The Truth), painted around 1901 and now in the Musée d'Orsay, Le Repos pendant la Fuite en Égypte, painted around 1880 and now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the largest mosaic in France, created according to his drawings and decorating the cul-de-four of the apse of the choir of the Sacré-Coeur basilica in Montmartre.
The study of poppies presented here is typical of the preparatory work Luc-Olivier Merson was able to carry out. Trained in the fine arts, awarded the Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1869, and himself a teacher to a number of great artists, Luc-Olivier Merson was a master of detail.
As can be seen in many of his historical and religious paintings (Spring Awakening, The Truth, Christ before Martha and Mary, etc.), Luc-Olivier Merson's particular attention to detail is expressed in the precision and fidelity of his depictions of the plant kingdom.
