"Alexander Calder. The Mercury Fountain. Drawing "
In 1937, Calder was commissioned by the Spanish government to create a sculpture at the Paris Universal Exhibition. He imagines this fountain animated by mercury, a tribute to the miners of Almaden who resisted the siege held by Francoist groups. This sculpture has now been in place at the Joan Miro Foundation since 1975. Our two drawings were produced during the movement of the fountain and its installation at the foundation. This drawing comes from the collection of Luis Bunuel and was presented at the Grand Palais in 2018.
