In 1903, on the initiative of Georges Maspéro, the Ecole des Arts Appliqués de Biên-Hòa was founded, with the aim of training art founders and, above all, potters and ceramists, drawing on an ancient local folk tradition. The School's training combines aesthetics derived from Vietnamese history (Dongson, Âu-Lạc, Thanh-Hóa, Giao-Chỉ, Chàm, Lê Antérieurs, Lý, etc.) with Chinese, Khmer and French elements (Art Nouveau then Art Deco), giving Biên-Hòa's production a distinctive syncretic character.
