Object description :

"Bronze Woman's Head, Bien Hoa School, Vietnam, 20th Century"
Woman's head in bronze. The hair is chiseled and styled into a bun, which is adorned with a decorative pin. She is wearing earrings. Signature of the Biên Hòa School of Applied Arts on the nape of the neck.

In 1903, on the initiative of Georges Maspéro, the Ecole des Arts Appliqués de Biên-Hòa was founded, with the aim of training art founders and, above all, potters and ceramists, drawing on an ancient local folk tradition. The School's training combines aesthetics derived from Vietnamese history (Dongson, Âu-Lạc, Thanh-Hóa, Giao-Chỉ, Chàm, Lê Antérieurs, Lý, etc.) with Chinese, Khmer and French elements (Art Nouveau then Art Deco), giving Biên-Hòa's production a distinctive syncretic character.
