"19th Century Painting, After Raphael's Famous Painting "the Madonna Del Passaggio""
Superb and elegant oil painting on canvas after Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio Da Urbino, 1483 – Rome, 1520), great Italian painter who created the original on wood around 1516 and which is in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. This work entitled "madonna del passaggio" for "the madonna of the promenade" It is a religious painting by Raphael or one of his disciples produced around 1516. The original is kept at the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. It represents Mary accompanied by the child Jesus and Saint John the Baptist. It is probably Joseph, carrying a bundle, who is behind the bush. It is perhaps a representation of the flight into Egypt even if it took place shortly after the birth of Jesus, therefore at an age before that of the child in the painting. The river could be the Jordan. The copy is faithful to the original and of the same size but with one notable difference: the genitals of the child Jesus are covered with a loincloth, obliging prudishness in the 19th century. The whole is of superb quality, the colors have remained lively and luminous, all in excellent condition and presented in a period gilded frame.
