Day And Night - Small Louis XV Style Alcove Cartel In Gilt Bronze. Circa 1880

Lovely little Alcove Cartel inspired by Louis flowery. Summoned to its amortization with an aerial sentimental trophy uniting within a sinuous openwork cartridge crossed by a palm, ribbon, stems stitched with roses in bud, torchiere with flaming brandon (symbol of amorous ardor), the clock, carried by four arched scrolling legs, rests on a counter-base hemmed with undulating plant curves punctuated with patterns of shells with wavy edges or wavelets. The latter is surrounded by a central spring throw of flowers. Set with gilded bronze bangles, the circular white enameled dial of the cartel indicates the hours and minutes in Roman and Arabic numerals using two flowered hands. Coiled in small curvilinear cartridges, adorable cherub faces surround it in its upper and lower part. Alertly chiselled, one smiling, her hair haloed by a gleaming beam of solar rays, is about to flutter gaily; the other, the forehead enveloped in the starry veil of Night seems to sleep peacefully under the auspices of the Lunar star enmeshed with Poppy flowerings, givers of nocturnal and loving reveries. Symbolizing respectively Day (or Dawn) and Night, these charming childish heads with wings immediately place our Louis and beautifully sophisticated. As such, it illustrates both through its ornamental repertoire and through its themes the liveliness at the turn of the 19th-20th century of forms as well as the lovingly playful imagination of Rococo. We will highlight the neat character of this small cartel provided on its reverse side, also decorated with a flap centered on an openwork rosette. --------------- Parisian work in Louis XV style from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
