Description:
A unique piece of Sacred art with an exquisite miniature painting of Saint John of the Cross, who is here represented at the moment of ectasis when he has the vision of the Holy Cross while in contemplative prayer.
The anonymous artist shows great talent in the way he infuses drama and emotion to the Baroque painting and outstanding craftmanship in the detail of such small work.
On the other side, we can see the Holy Relics arranged around a bine figurine of a crucifixion surrounded by intricate gold gilt embroidery.
The Holy Relics are kept inside a silver theca with a ring to be hanged. All protected by its original diamond cut crystal covers.
Reliquary probably meant for a wealthy family or high ranking cleric for the occasion of the canonization of Saint John of the Cross in 1726.
St. John of the Cross
Born: 1542 (month and day uncertain)
Died: 14 Dec 1591
Beatified: 22 Jan 1675 by Clement X
Canonized: 27 Dec 1726 by Benedict XIII
Doctor of the Church: 24 Aug 1926 by Pius XI
A contemporary of St Teresa, together they reformed the Carmelite friars. Enormously gifted, he was a hospital worker, poet, writer, builder of houses and aqueducts, and spiritual director – all in the midst of a deeply contemplative prayer life as a Carmelite friar. He exacts an integral spiritual poverty for one who wishes to come into possession of the all who is God. Even the slightest attachment hinders a person from reaching union with God.
