Balthazar Jean Baron (Lyon, 1788-1869) is a French designer, etcher, lithographer and painter.
His paintings are rare on the art market. While managing a silk factory and being a magistrate attached to the Lyon commercial court (1843-1845), he began to produce a certain number of engravings from his own drawings, mainly rural landscapes or views inspired by his region. , but there are also views of Versailles, Senlis and Francheville.
Thirty years ago, only a few local scholars knew the name of Balthazar-Jean Baron (1788-1869). It took one hundred and thirty years, an article in the journal Nouvelles de l'estampe, two exhibitions, the passion of a couple - Colette and Étienne Bidon - and the discovery of a workshop collection of nearly five hundred -twenty-five drawings, washes and watercolors in the reserves of the Paul Prouté gallery to bring this artist out of the shadows.
