"Shepherd With Sheep On A Forest Path By Karl Kaufmann (1843-1905) Attr. To"
The impressionist painting of the summer forest with a shepherd and sheep was executed at the end of the 19th century and, due to the completely identical subject, manner and composition as well as the presence of a well-known pseudonym known, Schwartz has been attributed to the hand of the Austrian landscape and architectural painter Karl. Kaufmann (1843-1905). He studied at the Vienna Academy and was active in Vienna in the 1900s. His European cityscapes and landscapes brought him worldwide fame. Our painting was signed by the artist under his pseudonym "A.Schwartz". This pseudonym is one of several pseudonyms adopted by the artist Karl Kaufmann to circumvent the exclusionary contracts that many 19th-century art dealers and galleries forced their artists to sign. It was unusual for popular artists to contract with different galleries under different names; this allowed them to offer their works in different venues without breaking any legally binding contractual agreements. This gave them the opportunity to sell more.
