This expressionist-style painting expresses a feeling of lightness through the use of light colours and undulating forms, giving the illusion of a painting in motion.
There are a few slight cracks in the paint, but it is not missing. The painting is framed in wood and gilded stucco, with a few small chips (see photos) that in no way detract from the overall aesthetic and even contribute to its old-fashioned charm.
Pierre Delclaux, an artist born in Corrèze, studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, where he was awarded first prize for painting in 1953. He was a pupil of Jean Lurçat from 1954 to 1961, and then taught at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Dakar from 1962 to 1964.
He is best known for having painted the Way of the Cross in the church at Latronquière in the Lot department, a work he produced when he was 23 in 1956 and which was subsequently listed as a historic monument in 1987. The work depicts the martyrdom of the people of Latronquière during the events of 11 May 1944, through the martyrdom of Christ as he ascended Golgota.
