Beautiful study of four characters made in colored pencils signed lower right Ph. Maliavine. Known for his representations of Russian peasant women, Maliavine is one of the great representatives of Russian art abroad. Trained in the art of the icon in a monastery on Mount Athos and child of a large Russian peasant family. He left Russia in 1922 to work in Paris then in Nice where he died in 1940. Gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Member of the Russian painters' union. Exhibited in 1924 at the Charpentier gallery with great success.
