Abraham Janssens van Nuyssen said Abraham Janssens (Antwerp between 1573 and 1576 according to sources - Antwerp 1632). Before the advent of Peter Paul Rubens, he is considered the greatest painter of history (religious, allegorical or mythological subjects) of his time, and his equal. Pupil of Jan Snellinck to 1585, he spent a long time in Italy. It is reported to Rome in 1598 where he lived until 1601, date of admission to the guild of St. Luke in Antwerp. First attracted mannerism, Janssens is one of the first painters to introduce Caravaggism in Flanders. Became master of chiaroscuro, his painting is made of strong contrasts of light and shadow. Gerard Seghers and Theodoor Rombouts, among others, are his students.
