French school of the 18th century
Portrait of an architect at his work table, he holds a plan and his brush in his hand. He wears a gray frock coat and a lace frill which allows us to date the painting to the reign of Louis XVI, in the 1780s.
The original canvas is oval, it was re-lined and mounted on a modern rectangular frame, the modern frame takes up the original oval, see the photos. This oil on canvas was restored in the 1980s to ensure its conservation.
The colors are fresh and the network of scales, significant of an old 18th century canvas, is stabilized by the relining.
