"Small Provencal Panetière In Walnut – Early 19th Century"
At a time when bread, which was a precious commodity, had to be kept for at least a week, strange little pieces of furniture appeared. Originally simple wooden boxes, it was in Provence in the 19th century that panetières became increasingly sophisticated. This Provençal panetière is no exception. It opens with a surface-mounted door mounted on an iron hinge with an original functional lock called a safe with entry and key. The openwork facade and sides are decorated with a succession of spindle-shaped bars. The front uprights, also turned, end in small crowbars. The lower crosspiece and the pediment, cut out, are decorated with flower and scroll motifs. This regional conservation piece of furniture is adorned at the four corners, as well as on the front, with plumes, also called mouchets or bobèches. The interior is made up of seven slats. This panetière, a witness to the habits and customs of yesteryear, will bring a traditional touch to your kitchen, otherwise, it will make a delightful and original storage space. ******** Period: Early 19th Century Excellent condition.
