"Russian Icon Of Saint Nicholas, Moscow Circa 1800 / Orthodox Russia / Icone "
Beautiful Russian icon representing Saint Nicholas known as the "miracle worker".It dates from the beginning of the 19th century -- around 1800/1820.
Its style and great finesse allow us to attribute it to one of the best workshops in Moscow, in the tradition of the Strogonov school of the 17th century. Saint Nicholas, in bishop's attire, is represented full-length, blessing with his right hand and holding the Bible with the other.
This painting on gold is very delicately done with tempera (paint made from egg yolk) in warm tones. The saint's clothes are richly decorated and the background of the icon is gilded.
Very good general state of conservation with a nice patina. Wear over time, cracks and restorations, particularly on the edge.
