Kashmiri shawls are highly prized for their fine wool, skillful weaving and embroidery, and soft texture. This one was made by hand on a vertical loom and would have taken six months to a year to make.
Shawls were originally worn exclusively by men and were very long to cover the entire length, then by women, then as decorative items in interior decoration. Over time and because of the way they were worn, they were shortened to be worn on the shoulders.
