The whole is very textured, painted with a knife. This very present material gives a particular intensity to the work.
The work is signed Régis Bérard at the bottom left. This is a pseudonym that the artist often used (see below).
The work is in good condition. It has been cleaned and varnished. No restoration is observed. The frame is probably the original frame. It is sober, made of wood, with a discreet molding.
The artist
Louis Bissinger was born in Lyon on April 24, 1899. He studied cello at the Lyon Conservatory of Music, where he entered in 1914, before turning to painting. He creates landscapes and still lifes in the Lyon region. The painter regularly uses the pseudonym “Régis Bérard” to sign his paintings.
In 1943, he was arrested as a resistance fighter, then deported to the Buchenwald camp where he remained until May 1945. There he produced numerous watercolor drawings mainly showing views of the camp. On his return, he exhibited his works on the Buchenwald camp.
After the war, he continued his artistic career by settling in Morestel, in Isère.
In 1955, he donated around ten watercolors on paper to the Army Museum, landscapes showing views of the Buchenwald camp.
Louis Bissinger addressed many subjects in his painting: landscapes, portraits, street scenes, still lifes...
His works have been the subject of numerous public sales.
