The Palais du Trocadéro was inaugurated on May 1st, 1878, the day of the official opening of the Universal Exhibition in Paris, for which it was specially built. It consisted of an auditorium and two museums.
Once the Exhibition was over, the palace – known the world over thanks to its success – became the place to be for all kinds of festivities: art galleries, concerts, private and public ceremonies. It was demolished between 1935 and 1937 and replaced by the Palais de Chaillot.
Our work can be compared with a gouache sold by Sotheby’s in New York on October 29,2002, lot 96.
