Early 20th century North Africa Rare Berber Burnous woven in camel or dromedary hair, camel-colored, originating from the gates of the Algerian or Tunisian desert. The handloom weaving is particularly fine with both the softness and roughness of camel hair. Open front and adorned with Carmine silk embroidery on the chest and around the edge of a very large hood garnished with matching pompoms. Piped at the bottom with a matching carmine silk cord. Dating from the period of Pierre Loti, when Orientalism was particularly fashionable, rustic camel weaves are relatively rare. Note a few rare areas of tiny moth holes, otherwise clean, no major defects. To wear or collect. Good general structural condition.
