"Two Lovers Fighting For A Heart, Biscuit Group, Jean-baptiste Pigalle"
This porcelain biscuit group, based on the sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle on display at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, depicts Eros and Anteros, the two sons of Aphrodite and Ares, fighting over a heart. This theme was also worked on by Etienne Maurice Falconet, who, like Pigalle, was a pupil of the 18th-century sculptor Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne.
These two winged lovers, depicted full-length in combat, are fighting to retrieve a heart that has fallen to the ground. The bodies are chubby and naked, lightly covered with a drooping drapery. One of them is carrying a quiver with arrows, while the other is slung over his shoulder with a garland of flowers.
In very good condition, with no chips or cracks.
