"Polychrome Alabaster Sculpture, Saint Michael Slaying The Dragon, 17th Century, Italy"
Ancient religious alabaster sculpture from the end of the 17th century. Very beautiful religious subject depicting the archangel Saint Michael slaying the dragon. This scene illustrates the outcome of the struggle between the archangel and the rebellious angels described by Saint John in the Apocalypse. The archangel dressed in an ancient breastplate and armed with a shield in his left hand, raises his opposite arm ready to strike the dragon at his feet. The dynamics of this work evoke the Baroque sculptures of southern Italy and Sicily at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. Very beautiful polychrome alabaster enhanced with gilding. The stone rests on a wooden base imitating marble. 42cm in height. Very good condition
