The Ogoni are known for their small, delicately carved masks with hinged jaws called Elu. Elu masks are used in different ceremonies throughout the year and generally depict peaceful and benevolent figures of both sexes. Most Elu masks are cut off at the mouth and a hinge system allows the wearer to open and close the mouth, exposing metal or rattan teeth.
