Georges Smeets-Sand, adopted son of Aurore Sand, granddaughter of GEORGE SAND. Aurore, who died in 1961, had bequeathed the Nohant estate to the State, and had settled in Gargilesse, where she lived with her adopted son Georges and his wife. When Aurore Sand died, Christiane and her husband worked to preserve and transmit the work of the Nohant writer. When Georges Smeets-Sand passed away, in 1970, Christiane applied herself alone to continue the work: she notably managed the Algira museum in Gargilesse, of which she was the usufructuary (the municipality being the owner) and of which she owned part of the collections. In the 1980s, she was curator of the George-Sand museum in La Châtre, always with the aim of maintaining the memory of the writer.
