Rare Secret Painting, Pie IX Dead, 1878, Signed Joseph Wencker

Rare and moving secret painting representing the death of Pape Pie IX in 1878 and signed Joseph Wencker (1848-1919).

This already rare painting dated 1878 is presented in a complex mahogany frame with secret, in fact it has two doors on the front allowing the scene to be hidden.

This oil on panel shows great mastery in the manner treated by the painter, rendering the death of Pie IX, not only in a solemn atmosphere but also in great piety.
the Pape seems to appear as if levitating.
the painting is in excellent condition. the mahogany frame is very finely worked and its doors with the Pope's coat of arms (pontifical) allow the scene to be concealed.
the frame unfortunately has lost some small decorative elements visible in the photos.

the painting is signed, dated and dedicated at the bottom.
It seems that the painter executed this painting and the air dedicated to the Marquise de Noailles in 1878. wife of the French ambassador to Rome Emmanuel Henri Victurnien de Noailles (1830-1909).

a small masterpiece for a rare representation of a particularly intimate scene of historical value.
